Born in Brooklyn, raised in Albany, but never forgetting his birth roots, Joe is currently a Student Association Senator representing off-campus students as well as is the Chairman of the Student Outreach, Accountability, and Rights ("SOAR") Committee (formerly University Outreach).
Joe previously served as Senate Vice President, Senior Class President, and a Senator representing Broadcast Communications students at Hudson Valley Community College in nearby Troy, NY. As Vice President, Joe was primarily in charge of on-campus event programming with a budget of approximately $220,000 as well as serving on the Student Senate's club budget committee, determining budgetary appropriations for over 90 clubs on campus. Joe stepped in for the President of the Senate on a number of occasions, whether giving awards to outstanding students, staff members, and organizations or pushing forward student outreach issues to the forefront - Joe was there.
At Hudson Valley, Joe also served as President of WHVC Radio, serving two terms. When Joe became President, WHVC faced "extinction" with the Siek Campus Center renovation plans had excluded the organization from the blueprints. Through lobbying with administration officials and setting a goal of bringing back an FCC-licensed station to the college, WHVC not only recieved office space in the Campus Center, but also obtained thousands of dollars in grant funding.
In addition to WHVC, Joe served as President of the Theatre Club. Seeing the need to bring theatre to a bigger "stage", Joe upped the number of performances the organization put on from two a year to four a year. The level of quality of performances also increased dramatically through getting students who would normally not be involved with extracurricular activities into the fold. Today, through these steps taken not too long ago, HVCC is has now introduced a Theatre major.
As Director of Albany Student Television (ATV) here at UAlbany from 2008 to 2009, Joe turned ATV from essentially a two-person operation to a 115 member-strong organization which produces daily programming such as “Wake Up Albany,” “NewsNight,” and “ChitChat” as well as specialty programming such as “SportsReport” and “After Hours” (hosted by Joe himself). Joe’s main aim was to make ATV operationally sustainable – developing programs that will be here long after most of us graduate. Outreach has been a key element – working with students who had never stepped in the SA office before as well as groups who wanted to publicize and record their events. Joe currently still sits on the executive board for ATV, serving as Executive Producer for "After Hours".
Joe currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of BASKnickerbocker Inc. (www.basknick.com), an Albany-based diversified media and information company. Joe also serves as Vice President for the Aurora Foundation of Northeast (community organization to keep kids off the street, developing a LGBT safehome for the Capital Region, and promote environmental sustainability) as well as Committee Chair for BSA149, an Albany-based youth outreach program.
